Know your flood risk campaign

With the Environment Agency this week issuing weather warnings and flood alerts for the South East, South West, East Anglia and the North East of England, the Know Your Flood Risk Campaign is urging homeowners to be aware and prepare against the perils of surface water flooding.

A YouGov survey, which was commissioned by the Know Your Flood Risk campaign earlier this year, showed that in spite of increased incidents of unseasonal extreme weather and floods in recent years, 67% of respondents reported that they have never checked the flood risk levels of their property*.

Mary Dhonau OBE, Hon DSc Hon RICS, Chief Executive of the Know Your Flood Risk campaign, said: “We face a new wave of weather warnings and flood alerts from the Environment Agency as heavy rain makes its way across the country this week. With this in mind, we want to remind homeowners that there are many free tools and services available today to help them develop a flood plan and be prepared. In the unfortunate situation of a flood occurring, we’ve produced a recovery guide that offers practical advice and guidance to help victims of flood through the initial stages of recovery.”

The Know Your Flood Risk campaign has produced a free Flood Resilience Guide as well as a Flood Recovery guide – both can be downloaded via www.knowyourfloodrisk.co.uk. A free ‘Flood Risk’ iPhone appis also available, which provides real-time flood alerts and other useful guidance.

The Know Your Flood Risk Campaign’s mission is to raise awareness of the risk of flooding from all sources. It is one of the UK’s leading online sources for helping people find out the flood risk related to their current or future homes. Visitors to the campaign’s website can also purchase a Know Your Flood Risk Report, which assesses the potential risk and confirms whether the homeowner will be able to obtain insurance at standard terms. The property-specific assessment report can be purchased for £24.00.
